FAQs

Arabica beans are grown in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many countries, each country and location will result in a different taste from what is basically the same coffee species due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica shrub that are usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean production.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the region, they are typically sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also show fruit or berry flavours and can have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are typically stronger, harsher & can have grainy or rubbery overtones.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may display a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are usually thought as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they display a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can show superior flavour and are very renowned.

Arabica beans have caffeine but usually less caffeine compared to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans have about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher amount of caffeine, commonly people prefer to drink Arabica as it is not as bitter & displays a nicer taste.

Arabica coffee is most costly compared to Robusta beans as it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is grown in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often grown at sea level & in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the plantation, has more fruit yield & is more resistant to insects.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} & regions. This is because of the different climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.

The roasting process also plays a major role in the taste characteristics of the coffee. Blending different varieties and roasting is an art & science. Specialist roasters meticulously control & adjust all aspects of the roast proceedure to develop different tastes in their coffee & ensure consistency between batches of roasts. Flavour differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of other aspects that are controlled during the roasting.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted coffee. Light roasted coffee will keep more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinguishable flavours of the beans from the various regions can often be more distinct in lighter roasted coffee. This is key to think about when buying coffee.
