FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many nations around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many countries, each nation and location will produce a different taste from what is essentially the same coffee species due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica tree which is typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the location, they are generally sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also have fruit or berry tasts & may have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans which are stronger, harsher & may show grainy or rubbery tastes.

Usually people find the taste of Arabica to be better to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are tasted as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can display a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are usually thought as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can show superior taste & are extremely renowned.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but typcially less caffeine compared to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, many people would rather have Arabica because it is not as bitter & exhibits a nicer taste.

Arabica coffee is most costly compared to Robusta coffee because it is more difficult to farm.

Arabica is cultivated in colder sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often cultivated at sea level & in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and withstands a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the plantation, has a higher bean yield and is more resistant to bugs.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} and regions. This is because of the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roasting process also influences a major role in the flavour profile of the coffee. Mixing different types and roasting is both an art and science. Specialist roasters meticulously control & change every aspect of the roast process to make different tastes in their coffee & ensure consistency across batches of beans. Flavour differs depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of other conditions that are regulated during the process.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted beans. Light roast coffee will retain more tastes than darker roasts. This can mean that the marked flavours of the coffee from the different areas can often be more distinguishable in lighter roasted coffee. This is important to consider when buying coffee.
