FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many countries, each country & location will result in a distinct taste from what is basically the same coffee species due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica shrub that are usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the location, they are typically sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also have fruit or berry flavours and can exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans which are stronger, harsher and may have grainy or rubbery overtones.

Typically people find the flavour of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are typcially more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are tasted as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may show a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are usually thought as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can have nicerbetter flavour & are very popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but typcially less caffeine compared to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, most people prefer to consume Arabica because it is not as bitter and displays a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta beans because it is more difficult to cultivate.

Arabica is cultivated in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is commonly cultivated at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ and tolerates a broader range of climatic conditions. Robusta is simplier to tend to on the farm, has a higher fruit yield & is better resistant to pest insects.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} & areas. This is due to the different climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.

The roasting proceedure also influences a major role in the taste characteristics of the beans. Mixing different varieties and roasting is both an art and science. Specialist roasters meticulously control and adjust every aspect of the roast process to make different tastes in their beans & ensure consistency across batches of coffee. Flavour changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of other factors that are controlled during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder flavour than lightly roasted coffee. Light roasted coffee beans typcially keep more tastes than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinct tastes of the coffee from the various regions can often be more pronounced in lighter roasted coffee. This is important to consider when purchasing coffee.
