FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many nations around the globe. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is cultured in many nations, each country & area will result in a distinct flavour from what is basically the same coffee bush due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species that are usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean production.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the location, they are generally sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also show fruit or berry flavours and can display hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are stronger, harsher and can display grainy or rubbery flavours.

Usually people find the taste of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are typcially more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may display a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are usually considered as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter & less bitter taste. However, some blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can display nicerbetter taste and are very popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but generally less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, usually people prefer to consume Arabica because it is not as bitter and exhibits a nicer flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta beans as it is harder to cultivate.

Arabica is farmed in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often farmed at sea level & in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and tolerates a wide range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the farm, has more fruit yield & is better resistant to pest insects.

No, there is a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and locations. This is due to the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roast process also plays a significant role in the taste characteristics of the coffee. Combining different types & roasting is an art & science. Professional roasters meticulously control & change every aspect of the roasting process to make different flavours in their beans and ensure consistency across batches of roasts. Taste changes based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of other aspects that are controlled during the process.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted coffee. Light roast coffee typcially keep more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinguishable flavours of the coffee from the different locations can often be more pronounced in light roasted beans. This is important to consider when buying beans.
