FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many nations around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is cultured in many nations, each nation & area will produce a distinct taste from what is essentially the same coffee species due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica species which is typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the area, they are usually sweet with notes of chocolate and sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry tasts and may show hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that are stronger, harsher & may display grainy or rubbery tastes.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be better to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are typcially more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can have a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are usually known as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they display a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can show superior taste and are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but typcially less caffeine as opposed to Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, most people prefer to have Arabica as it is less bitter and exhibits a nicer flavour.

Arabica coffee is most costly compared to Robusta beans because it is harder to cultivate.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is usually cultivated at sea level & in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ & tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to tend to on the plantation, has a higher bean yield and is more resistant to bugs.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica coffeecoffee beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} and locations. This is due to the different climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roasting process also influences a major part in the flavour profile of the coffee. Mixing different varieties & roasting is both an art and science. Specialist roasters meticulously control & change all aspects of the roasting proceedure to develop different flavours in their coffee & ensure consistency across batches of roasts. Flavour changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of other conditions that are regulated during the process.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder flavour than lightly roasted beans. Light roast coffee beans usually retain more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinguishable flavours of the beans from the different locations can often be more pronounced in light roasted coffee. This is paramount to consider when purchasing beans.
