FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is grown in many nations, each country & location will make a distinct flavour from what is basically the same coffee species due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species that are commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the region, they are typically sweet with notes of chocolate and sugar. They can also have fruit or berry tasts and may exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which tend to be stronger, harsher & can exhibit grainy or rubbery tastes.

Typically people find the flavour of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are usually more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are tasted as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can exhibit a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are typically considered as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica and Robusta can show nicerbetter taste and are very renowned.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but generally less caffeine than Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher amount of caffeine, most people would rather have Arabica because it is not as bitter and exhibits a nicer taste.

Arabica coffee is more expensive than Robusta coffee because it is harder to grow.

Arabica is farmed in colder sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is typically cultivated at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ & withstands a broader range of climatic conditions. Robusta is simplier to tend to on the plantation, has greater bean yield & is more resistant to insects.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} and areas. This is because of the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roast proceedure also plays a major role in the flavour characteristics of the beans. Blending different varieties and roasting is both an art and science. Professional roasters carefully control and change every aspect of the roast proceedure to make different tastes in their beans & maintain consistency across batches of coffee. Taste changes based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of additional aspects that are regulated during the roast.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted beans. Light roast coffee beans will keep more tastes than darker roasts. This can mean that the marked flavours of the beans from the various locations are be more distinct in light roasted beans. This is paramount to consider when purchasing coffee.
