FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many countries, each nation & region will make a distinct flavour from what is basically the same coffee species due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica plant which is commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee bean production.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the location, they are generally sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also display fruit or berry flavours & can exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that are stronger, harsher and can exhibit grainy or rubbery flavours.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are typcially more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may have a less fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are usually thought as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they display a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can exhibit nicerbetter flavour and are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but typcially less caffeine compared to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater amount of caffeine, most people would rather have Arabica as it is less bitter and displays a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta beans because it is harder to farm.

Arabica is grown in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often grown at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ and tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the plantation, has greater fruit yield & is more resistant to pests.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and regions. This is because of the different climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roasting process also plays a major role in the flavour profile of the coffee beans. Combining different varieties & roasting is both an art and science. Specialist roasters carefully control & change all aspects of the roast proceedure to develop different tastes in their coffee & maintain consistency across batches of coffee. Taste changes based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a range of additional things that are controlled during the roast.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted beans. Light roast beans will retain more flavours than dark roasts. This can mean that the distinct tastes of the beans from the different regions can often be more distinguishable in light roasted beans. This is key to think about when buying beans.
