FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many countries around the world. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many nations, each nation and region will result in a different taste from what is basically the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica plant which is commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the location, they are generally sweet with notes of chocolate and sugar. They can also show fruit or berry tasts and may have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to display more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans which are typically stronger, harsher and may show grainy or rubbery flavours.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are typcially more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can show a less fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are typically thought as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter & less bitter taste. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can display superior taste and are extremely renowned.

Arabica beans have caffeine but generally less caffeine compared to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans contain about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, usually people prefer to have Arabica because it is not as bitter and shows a superior taste.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee because it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is grown in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is often cultivated at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and tolerates a wide range of climatic conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the plantation, has a higher fruit yield & is more resistant to insects.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and locations. This is due to the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.

The roasting process also plays a major role in the flavour profile of the beans. Blending different types & roasting is both an art & science. Specialist roasters carefully control and adjust every aspect of the roasting proceedure to craft different flavours in their coffee and ensure consistency between batches of roasts. Taste changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of other aspects that are regulated during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted coffee. Light roast coffee typcially retain more flavours than darker roasts. This means that the marked flavours of the coffee from the different locations are be more distinguishable in light roasted coffee. This is key to think about when buying coffee beans.
