FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many nations around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many nations, each country and area will result in a distinct flavour from what is essentially the same coffee tree due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species that are commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the region, they are usually sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also show fruit or berry tasts & can show hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are stronger, harsher & may display grainy or rubbery overtones.

Most people find the flavour of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may exhibit a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are usually considered as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica and Robusta can exhibit superior taste and are extremely popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but typcially less caffeine compared to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the higher amount of caffeine, usually people would rather drink Arabica because it is not as bitter and displays a superior taste.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee because it is more difficult to cultivate.

Arabica is cultivated in colder sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is commonly farmed at sea level & in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the farm, has a higher bean yield and is more resistant to pests.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica coffeecoffee beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} & areas. This is because of the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roast proceedure also plays a significant role in the flavour profile of the coffee. Blending different varieties & roasting is both an art & science. Professional roasters carefully control & change every aspect of the roasting proceedure to make different tastes in their coffee and maintain consistency across batches of beans. Taste changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of other things that are regulated during the roasting.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted beans. Light roast beans will keep more flavours than darker roasts. This means that the distinct flavours of the coffee from the various locations can often be more distinguishable in lighter roasted beans. This is paramount to think about when buying beans.
