FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many countries, each nation and area will result in a distinct flavour from what is basically the same coffee bush due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica species which is usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the area, they are generally sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry tasts and can have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that are typically stronger, harsher and may show grainy or rubbery flavours.

Typically people find the flavour of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can display a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are typically thought as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can show superior flavour & are very popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but typcially less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher amount of caffeine, commonly people prefer to consume Arabica because it is less bitter & displays a superior flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive than Robusta coffee because it is harder to farm.

Arabica is cultivated in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is often farmed at sea level & in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the plantation, has more bean yield & is better resistant to pests.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} and areas. This is due to the different climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roasting process also influences a major role in the taste profile of the beans. Blending different varieties & roasting is both an art and science. Professional roasters carefully control & change all aspects of the roasting proceedure to develop different flavours in their beans and maintain consistency across batches of roasts. Flavour differs depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of other factors that are controlled during the process.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted coffee. Light roasted beans typcially retain more tastes than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinct flavours of the beans from the different regions can often be more pronounced in light roasted beans. This is paramount to think about when purchasing coffee.
