FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many nations around the world. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is grown in many countries, each country & location will result in a distinct taste from what is essentially the same coffee plant due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica tree which is usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the area, they are typically sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also show fruit or berry flavours and may have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that are stronger, harsher & may have grainy or rubbery flavours.

Most people find the flavour of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can have a less fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are typically thought as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can show superior taste & are extremely renowned.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but typcially less caffeine compared to Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, commonly people would rather consume Arabica because it is less bitter & displays a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta beans because it is more difficult to farm.

Arabica is cultivated in colder sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is often grown at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ & tolerates a wide range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the plantation, has greater bean yield and is better resistant to pests.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} & areas. This is due to the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roasting proceedure also plays a significant part in the taste characteristics of the coffee. Combining different varieties & roasting is an art & science. Specialist roasters meticulously control & adjust all aspects of the roasting process to make different flavours in their beans & maintain consistency between batches of beans. Taste changes based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a range of additional aspects that are regulated during the process.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted coffee. Light roasted beans will retain more tastes than darker roasts. This can mean that the marked flavours of the coffee from the different regions are be more pronounced in light roasted beans. This is important to consider when purchasing beans.
