FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many nations around the globe. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many countries, each country and area will produce a different taste from what is basically the same coffee bush due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica tree which is usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the location, they are usually sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry flavours and can exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which tend to be stronger, harsher & can exhibit grainy or rubbery flavours.

Manny people find the flavour of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may show a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are usually known as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica and Robusta can display superior taste & are extremely popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but usually less caffeine than Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, commonly people would rather have Arabica as it is less bitter and has a superior taste.

Arabica coffee is most costly than Robusta beans because it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is farmed in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is typically farmed at sea level & in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the plantation, has greater bean yield and is more resistant to pest insects.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} & areas. This is because of the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roasting proceedure also plays a significant part in the taste characteristics of the coffee. Mixing different varieties & roasting is an art and science. Specialist roasters carefully control and adjust every aspect of the roasting process to craft different flavours in their coffee & ensure consistency between batches of beans. Flavour changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of other aspects that are controlled during the process.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted beans. Light roasted coffee typcially keep more flavours than dark roasts. This can mean that the marked tastes of the coffee from the various locations can often be more distinct in lighter roasted beans. This is paramount to consider when purchasing beans.
