FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many nations, each country and location will produce a different taste from what is basically the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica species which is typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the area, they are usually sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry flavours and can exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that are stronger, harsher & can display grainy or rubbery flavours.

Usually people find the flavour of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are usually more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are tasted as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may have a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly thought as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter & less bitter taste. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica and Robusta can show superior flavour and are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but generally less caffeine than Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain almost double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, many people would rather have Arabica because it is less bitter & shows a nicer taste.

Arabica coffee is most costly compared to Robusta beans as it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is cultivated in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is commonly farmed at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and tolerates a broader range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the farm, has a higher fruit yield and is better resistant to bugs.

No, there is a lot of differences comparing Arabica coffeecoffee beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} & locations. This is due to the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.

The roasting proceedure also plays a major part in the taste profile of the beans. Combining different varieties & roasting is both an art & science. Specialist roasters meticulously control & change every aspect of the roast process to craft different tastes in their coffee and ensure consistency between batches of roasts. Flavour differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of additional things that are controlled during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder flavour than lightly roasted coffee. Light roast beans typcially retain more tastes than dark roasts. This can mean that the distinct flavours of the coffee from the various areas can often be more pronounced in lighter roasted coffee. This is key to consider when buying coffee beans.
