FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many countries, each country and region will result in a distinct flavour from what is basically the same coffee tree due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica shrub which is usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the location, they are typically sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry tasts and may exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans which tend to be stronger, harsher and may exhibit grainy or rubbery flavours.

Typically people find the flavour of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may have a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly considered as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica and Robusta can exhibit superior taste and are very renowned.

Arabica beans have caffeine but generally less caffeine compared to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans contain about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater amount of caffeine, many people prefer to have Arabica because it is less bitter and displays a nicer flavour.

Arabica coffee is most costly than Robusta beans because it is harder to farm.

Arabica is cultivated in colder sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often cultivated at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ & tolerates a wide range of climatic conditions. Robusta is simplier to tend to on the plantation, has a higher fruit yield & is more resistant to pest insects.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} & regions. This is because of the different climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roasting proceedure also influences a significant role in the taste characteristics of the coffee beans. Combining different types & roasting is an art and science. Specialist roasters meticulously control and change every aspect of the roasting process to develop different tastes in their coffee and ensure consistency between batches of roasts. Flavour changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a range of additional factors that are controlled during the process.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted beans. Light roast beans will keep more tastes than dark roasts. This means that the distinguishable tastes of the coffee from the various regions are be more pronounced in lighter roasted coffee. This is key to consider when purchasing coffee.
