FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many nations around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many nations, each nation & location will result in a distinct flavour from what is basically the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica tree that are usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee bean production.

The flavour of Arabica beans varies depending on the region, they are usually sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also display fruit or berry flavours and may show hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are typically stronger, harsher & can have grainy or rubbery overtones.

Manny people find the taste of Arabica to be better to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are tasted as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may display a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly considered as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can display superior taste & are very popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but typcially less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, typically people would rather have Arabica because it is less bitter & displays a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is most costly compared to Robusta coffee as it is harder to farm.

Arabica is cultivated in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is commonly grown at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the farm, has more fruit yield & is more resistant to pests.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} & regions. This is because of the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roasting process also plays a significant part in the flavour profile of the beans. Combining different types & roasting is both an art & science. Specialist roasters meticulously control & adjust all aspects of the roasting proceedure to make different tastes in their beans and maintain consistency between batches of roasts. Taste changes based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of other things that are controlled during the roasting.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted beans. Light roasted coffee beans usually keep more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinct tastes of the beans from the different locations are be more pronounced in lighter roasted coffee. This is paramount to think about when buying beans.
