FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many countries around the world. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is cultured in many nations, each nation and area will result in a distinct flavour from what is basically the same coffee species due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica shrub which is commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the area, they are generally sweet with notes of chocolate and sugar. They can also show fruit or berry flavours and may exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which tend to be stronger, harsher & may exhibit grainy or rubbery flavours.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can display a less fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are usually thought as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they display a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can display superior taste & are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but generally less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans have about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, most people would rather have Arabica as it is not as bitter & shows a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is most costly than Robusta beans because it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often cultivated at sea level & in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ & tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to tend to on the plantation, has more fruit yield & is more resistant to bugs.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} and regions. This is because of the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roasting process also influences a significant role in the flavour characteristics of the beans. Blending different varieties and roasting is both an art & science. Specialist roasters carefully control and adjust every aspect of the roast proceedure to craft different tastes in their beans and maintain consistency between batches of roasts. Flavour changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of other aspects that are regulated during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted beans. Light roasted beans typcially retain more flavours than darker roasts. This means that the marked flavours of the beans from the different regions can often be more pronounced in lighter roasted coffee. This is key to consider when purchasing beans.
