FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many nations around the globe. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many countries, each country & area will make a different flavour from what is basically the same coffee species due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica shrub that are commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the global coffee bean production.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the location, they are generally sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also have fruit or berry flavours and can show hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that are typically stronger, harsher & may have grainy or rubbery overtones.

Usually people find the taste of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may have a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are typically thought as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter & less bitter taste. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can display superior taste & are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but commonly less caffeine than Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater amount of caffeine, many people prefer to drink Arabica as it is less bitter & displays a better taste.

Arabica coffee is more expensive than Robusta coffee as it is more difficult to cultivate.

Arabica is farmed in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is typically cultivated at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ and withstands a wide range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the farm, has greater bean yield and is more resistant to pest insects.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} & locations. This is because of the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roasting process also influences a major role in the taste profile of the coffee. Combining different varieties & roasting is an art and science. Specialist roasters carefully control & adjust all aspects of the roasting process to craft different flavours in their coffee & maintain consistency across batches of beans. Flavour changes based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a range of additional conditions that are regulated during the process.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted beans. Light roast beans will keep more flavours than dark roasts. This means that the distinct tastes of the coffee from the different regions can often be more distinguishable in light roasted coffee. This is key to think about when buying beans.
