FAQs

Arabica beans are grown in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many countries, each nation and region will produce a distinct taste from what is basically the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica shrub which is typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean production.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the area, they are generally sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also have fruit or berry flavours and may exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to display more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are typically stronger, harsher and can show grainy or rubbery tastes.

Most people find the taste of Arabica to be better to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are usually more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are tasted as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may exhibit a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are usually thought as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they display a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can display superior taste & are very popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but typcially less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans have about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain almost double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, many people prefer to consume Arabica because it is not as bitter & shows a superior taste.

Arabica coffee is most costly compared to Robusta beans as it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is cultivated in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is often farmed at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ & withstands a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the farm, has more bean yield & is more resistant to pest insects.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and locations. This is due to the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.

The roasting proceedure also influences a significant part in the flavour characteristics of the beans. Blending different types and roasting is an art and science. Professional roasters carefully control & adjust every aspect of the roasting process to develop different tastes in their coffee and maintain consistency across batches of roasts. Taste differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of additional aspects that are regulated during the roast.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted coffee. Light roast coffee will retain more flavours than darker roasts. This means that the distinct flavours of the coffee from the different regions can often be more pronounced in lighter roasted beans. This is important to think about when purchasing coffee.
