FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many nations, each country and region will produce a distinct flavour from what is basically the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species that are commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean production.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the region, they are typically sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also show fruit or berry flavours and may display hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that tend to be stronger, harsher and may exhibit grainy or rubbery tastes.

Most people find the taste of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are typcially more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can show a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly considered as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can have nicerbetter flavour and are extremely renowned.

Arabica beans have caffeine but typcially less caffeine than Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, most people prefer to have Arabica as it is less bitter and shows a nicer flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee as it is harder to grow.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is usually cultivated at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ & withstands a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the farm, has greater bean yield and is better resistant to bugs.

No, there is a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} and areas. This is due to the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roasting proceedure also influences a major role in the flavour profile of the coffee. Blending different varieties & roasting is an art & science. Professional roasters carefully control & change all aspects of the roast proceedure to make different tastes in their beans and ensure consistency between batches of coffee. Taste differs depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of additional factors that are regulated during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted coffee. Light roast beans typcially keep more tastes than darker roasts. This can mean that the marked tastes of the coffee from the different locations can often be more distinguishable in light roasted coffee. This is important to consider when buying coffee beans.
