FAQs

Arabica beans are grown in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is cultured in many countries, each nation and location will produce a different taste from what is basically the same coffee species due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica tree that are commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean production.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the location, they are usually sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry flavours & may exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that are typically stronger, harsher & may show grainy or rubbery overtones.

Most people find the taste of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may display a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are typically known as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can display superior flavour and are very renowned.

Arabica beans have caffeine but commonly less caffeine compared to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the higher amount of caffeine, typically people would rather have Arabica because it is not as bitter and exhibits a nicer flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive than Robusta coffee as it is harder to farm.

Arabica is grown in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is often grown at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ and withstands a wide range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the plantation, has more bean yield and is better resistant to insects.

No, there is a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and areas. This is due to the different climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roasting proceedure also plays a major role in the taste characteristics of the coffee. Combining different types & roasting is both an art & science. Specialist roasters carefully control and change all aspects of the roast proceedure to craft different flavours in their coffee and maintain consistency between batches of roasts. Flavour changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of additional factors that are regulated during the roast.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted coffee. Light roast beans usually keep more tastes than darker roasts. This means that the distinct flavours of the beans from the various regions can often be more distinct in lighter roasted coffee. This is important to consider when buying coffee.
