FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many nations around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many countries, each country and region will produce a different taste from what is basically the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica shrub which is typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean production.

The flavour of Arabica beans varies depending on the location, they are typically sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also display fruit or berry tasts and can show hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to display more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans which are stronger, harsher and can exhibit grainy or rubbery tastes.

Manny people find the taste of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can display a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are typically thought as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica and Robusta can display superior flavour and are very popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but typcially less caffeine compared to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans contain about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, usually people prefer to drink Arabica because it is less bitter & displays a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee as it is harder to farm.

Arabica is cultivated in colder sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is typically farmed at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the farm, has greater fruit yield & is better resistant to pests.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica coffeecoffee beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} & areas. This is because of the different climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.

The roasting process also plays a significant part in the taste characteristics of the beans. Mixing different varieties and roasting is an art & science. Professional roasters carefully control and adjust all aspects of the roast process to develop different tastes in their coffee and ensure consistency between batches of roasts. Taste changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of additional conditions that are regulated during the process.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted beans. Light roasted coffee beans typcially keep more flavours than darker roasts. This means that the marked flavours of the coffee from the different locations are be more distinguishable in light roasted beans. This is key to think about when purchasing coffee.
