FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many countries around the world. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many nations, each country and region will make a distinct taste from what is basically the same coffee species due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica tree which is usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean production.

The flavour of Arabica beans varies depending on the location, they are generally sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also show fruit or berry tasts & may display hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are typically stronger, harsher and may show grainy or rubbery flavours.

Most people find the taste of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may show a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are usually known as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can display superior taste & are extremely renowned.

Arabica beans have caffeine but typcially less caffeine compared to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans have about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater amount of caffeine, typically people prefer to drink Arabica as it is not as bitter and exhibits a superior flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee as it is more difficult to farm.

Arabica is farmed in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is usually farmed at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ and withstands a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the plantation, has greater fruit yield & is better resistant to pest insects.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} & locations. This is because of the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roast proceedure also influences a significant part in the taste profile of the coffee beans. Blending different varieties & roasting is an art & science. Professional roasters carefully control and change all aspects of the roast proceedure to develop different flavours in their beans & maintain consistency across batches of coffee. Taste changes based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a range of additional aspects that are controlled during the roasting.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted beans. Light roast beans will retain more tastes than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinct tastes of the coffee from the different regions can often be more distinguishable in lighter roasted coffee. This is key to consider when purchasing coffee.
