FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many countries, each country and area will make a distinct flavour from what is essentially the same coffee species due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species that are usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the location, they are usually sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also display fruit or berry flavours & can have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that are stronger, harsher and may have grainy or rubbery flavours.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may have a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly considered as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica and Robusta can display superior flavour & are very renowned.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but usually less caffeine than Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher amount of caffeine, usually people would rather have Arabica because it is not as bitter & displays a nicer flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta beans as it is harder to farm.

Arabica is farmed in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is commonly farmed at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ & withstands a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the plantation, has greater fruit yield and is better resistant to insects.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} & areas. This is because of the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.

The roast process also plays a major role in the flavour characteristics of the coffee beans. Combining different varieties & roasting is an art & science. Specialist roasters carefully control & change all aspects of the roasting process to develop different tastes in their beans and ensure consistency between batches of coffee. Flavour changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of additional conditions that are controlled during the process.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted beans. Light roasted coffee beans typcially retain more tastes than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinguishable tastes of the coffee from the various regions can often be more pronounced in lighter roasted coffee. This is paramount to think about when purchasing coffee.
