FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many nations around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is cultured in many countries, each nation & region will result in a different taste from what is essentially the same coffee bush due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica shrub which is usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the location, they are usually sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry flavours and may display hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that are typically stronger, harsher and can show grainy or rubbery tastes.

Most people find the flavour of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can exhibit a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are usually considered as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica & Robusta can have superior taste & are very popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but typcially less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain almost double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher amount of caffeine, most people prefer to consume Arabica because it is less bitter and displays a superior taste.

Arabica coffee is more expensive than Robusta coffee because it is harder to grow.

Arabica is farmed in colder sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is commonly farmed at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ & withstands a broader range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the plantation, has a higher fruit yield and is more resistant to pest insects.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} & locations. This is because of the different climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.

The roasting process also influences a significant role in the flavour characteristics of the coffee. Blending different types and roasting is both an art & science. Specialist roasters meticulously control & change all aspects of the roasting process to develop different tastes in their coffee & maintain consistency across batches of roasts. Flavour differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of other conditions that are regulated during the process.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted beans. Light roasted coffee beans will keep more tastes than darker roasts. This means that the distinct tastes of the coffee from the various regions are be more pronounced in lighter roasted beans. This is important to think about when purchasing beans.
