FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many nations around the world. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is cultured in many countries, each nation and location will produce a distinct flavour from what is essentially the same coffee plant due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica plant which is usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the area, they are generally sweet with notes of chocolate and sugar. They can also show fruit or berry flavours & can exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that are typically stronger, harsher & may display grainy or rubbery overtones.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can show a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are usually known as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they display a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can show nicerbetter taste & are very popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but typcially less caffeine than Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, usually people would rather drink Arabica as it is not as bitter & exhibits a nicer flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee because it is harder to farm.

Arabica is farmed in colder sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often cultivated at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ & withstands a broader range of climatic conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the plantation, has more bean yield and is better resistant to pests.

No, there is a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and locations. This is because of the different climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.

The roasting process also plays a major part in the flavour characteristics of the beans. Combining different types and roasting is an art and science. Specialist roasters meticulously control & adjust every aspect of the roast proceedure to craft different tastes in their coffee and maintain consistency between batches of coffee. Flavour changes based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of other aspects that are controlled during the roasting.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder flavour than lightly roasted beans. Light roast coffee typcially keep more tastes than dark roasts. This means that the marked flavours of the beans from the different regions are be more distinct in lighter roasted coffee. This is paramount to consider when buying beans.
