FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many nations around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is grown in many countries, each country and location will produce a different flavour from what is basically the same coffee tree due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica shrub that are commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The flavour of Arabica beans varies depending on the location, they are typically sweet with notes of chocolate and sugar. They can also show fruit or berry tasts & can have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to display more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are stronger, harsher & can display grainy or rubbery overtones.

Manny people find the taste of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are typcially more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can have a less fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are usually considered as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica & Robusta can display superior flavour & are very popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but usually less caffeine than Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain almost double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, typically people would rather have Arabica as it is less bitter and exhibits a nicer taste.

Arabica coffee is most costly compared to Robusta coffee as it is harder to farm.

Arabica is grown in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is usually cultivated at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the farm, has greater bean yield and is better resistant to bugs.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} & locations. This is due to the different climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roast process also plays a major role in the flavour characteristics of the beans. Mixing different varieties and roasting is both an art & science. Professional roasters carefully control & adjust every aspect of the roasting proceedure to make different flavours in their beans & maintain consistency between batches of roasts. Flavour differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of other conditions that are regulated during the roast.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder flavour than lightly roasted beans. Light roasted coffee beans will keep more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinguishable tastes of the beans from the different areas are be more distinguishable in lighter roasted beans. This is paramount to consider when buying coffee.
