FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is cultured in many nations, each nation and region will result in a different taste from what is basically the same coffee bush due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica species which is commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the area, they are generally sweet with notes of chocolate and sugar. They can also display fruit or berry flavours & may display hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that are stronger, harsher & can display grainy or rubbery overtones.

Most people find the flavour of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may display a less fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly considered as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica and Robusta can show superior taste and are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but usually less caffeine as opposed to Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, typically people would rather drink Arabica as it is less bitter and has a superior taste.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee as it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is farmed in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often farmed at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ & withstands a broader range of climatic conditions. Robusta is simplier to tend to on the plantation, has a higher bean yield and is better resistant to insects.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} & areas. This is because of the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roast process also influences a significant part in the taste characteristics of the beans. Mixing different varieties & roasting is both an art & science. Specialist roasters carefully control & adjust all aspects of the roast process to make different flavours in their coffee and maintain consistency across batches of coffee. Taste differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of other aspects that are regulated during the roast.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted beans. Light roast beans typcially retain more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the marked flavours of the beans from the different areas are be more pronounced in lighter roasted coffee. This is key to consider when buying coffee.
