FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many countries, each nation and region will make a distinct taste from what is basically the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica shrub that are typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean production.

The flavour of Arabica beans varies depending on the area, they are usually sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also show fruit or berry flavours and may show hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to display more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are typically stronger, harsher and may exhibit grainy or rubbery flavours.

Typically people find the flavour of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may display a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly thought as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can have superior flavour & are very renowned.

Arabica beans have caffeine but typcially less caffeine compared to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans contain about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain almost double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, most people prefer to have Arabica because it is not as bitter and exhibits a nicer flavour.

Arabica coffee is most costly compared to Robusta beans as it is harder to grow.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is typically cultivated at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ and tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the plantation, has a higher bean yield and is more resistant to pests.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica coffeecoffee beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and areas. This is because of the different climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roasting proceedure also plays a significant role in the flavour characteristics of the beans. Combining different types & roasting is an art and science. Specialist roasters carefully control & change every aspect of the roasting process to develop different tastes in their beans and ensure consistency across batches of roasts. Flavour differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of other things that are controlled during the roast.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted coffee. Light roast coffee typcially keep more tastes than darker roasts. This means that the marked tastes of the beans from the different areas are be more pronounced in lighter roasted coffee. This is key to consider when purchasing coffee.
