FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many nations around the globe. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many nations, each country and location will result in a different flavour from what is basically the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica tree that are typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the location, they are generally sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also display fruit or berry flavours & may exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that are stronger, harsher & may have grainy or rubbery overtones.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are tasted as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may have a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are typically considered as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they display a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can show nicerbetter taste and are very popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but usually less caffeine than Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans have about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher amount of caffeine, usually people would rather have Arabica because it is less bitter & displays a nicer flavour.

Arabica coffee is most costly than Robusta beans as it is more difficult to cultivate.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is usually cultivated at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ and tolerates a wide range of climatic conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the plantation, has more fruit yield and is better resistant to pests.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} & areas. This is because of the different climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roast proceedure also plays a major role in the flavour characteristics of the coffee. Combining different types and roasting is an art and science. Specialist roasters meticulously control & adjust all aspects of the roasting process to make different flavours in their beans & maintain consistency between batches of coffee. Flavour differs depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of additional conditions that are controlled during the roasting.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted beans. Light roasted beans usually retain more tastes than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinguishable tastes of the beans from the various regions are be more pronounced in light roasted coffee. This is important to think about when buying coffee.
