FAQs

Arabica beans are grown in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is cultured in many nations, each nation and location will make a different taste from what is essentially the same coffee bush due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica tree that are typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The flavour of Arabica beans varies depending on the location, they are generally sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also show fruit or berry flavours and can display hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans which are typically stronger, harsher & can exhibit grainy or rubbery overtones.

Most people find the flavour of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are usually more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may exhibit a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly thought as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they display a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica and Robusta can display superior taste & are extremely popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but usually less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the higher amount of caffeine, many people would rather drink Arabica because it is less bitter and shows a better taste.

Arabica coffee is most costly than Robusta coffee because it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is cultivated in colder sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is typically farmed at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the plantation, has a higher bean yield and is better resistant to pests.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} & locations. This is because of the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.

The roast process also plays a major part in the flavour profile of the coffee beans. Combining different varieties and roasting is both an art and science. Professional roasters carefully control & change every aspect of the roasting process to make different tastes in their coffee & maintain consistency across batches of roasts. Flavour differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of additional things that are regulated during the process.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted beans. Light roast coffee beans typcially keep more tastes than dark roasts. This can mean that the distinct flavours of the beans from the various locations can often be more distinguishable in light roasted beans. This is key to think about when purchasing beans.
