FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many nations around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many nations, each country & area will produce a different flavour from what is basically the same coffee tree due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica tree which is usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the area, they are usually sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also display fruit or berry flavours and may show hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are stronger, harsher and may have grainy or rubbery overtones.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can have a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly known as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter & less bitter taste. However, some blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can show superior flavour and are extremely popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but commonly less caffeine than Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, typically people would rather consume Arabica as it is not as bitter and has a nicer flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive than Robusta coffee because it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is often cultivated at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ & withstands a broader range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the plantation, has greater bean yield and is better resistant to insects.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} and areas. This is due to the different climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roast proceedure also influences a major role in the flavour characteristics of the coffee beans. Blending different varieties & roasting is an art & science. Professional roasters meticulously control & adjust every aspect of the roast process to craft different flavours in their beans and ensure consistency across batches of roasts. Taste changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of other conditions that are regulated during the roasting.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted coffee. Light roasted coffee beans will retain more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinct tastes of the coffee from the various regions are be more distinct in lighter roasted coffee. This is key to think about when buying coffee beans.
