FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many nations around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many nations, each nation and area will result in a different flavour from what is essentially the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica shrub which is usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the region, they are generally sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also show fruit or berry flavours & may display hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are typically stronger, harsher & can have grainy or rubbery tastes.

Usually people find the flavour of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may show a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are typically thought as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica & Robusta can show superior taste & are extremely popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but generally less caffeine than Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, usually people prefer to consume Arabica as it is not as bitter & has a superior taste.

Arabica coffee is most costly than Robusta coffee as it is more difficult to farm.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is commonly farmed at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to tend to on the farm, has a higher bean yield and is better resistant to insects.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} & regions. This is due to the different climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.

The roasting process also plays a significant role in the taste profile of the coffee beans. Mixing different types and roasting is both an art and science. Professional roasters meticulously control & change all aspects of the roasting proceedure to develop different flavours in their coffee & maintain consistency between batches of beans. Flavour differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a range of additional factors that are regulated during the roast.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted beans. Light roast coffee beans typcially keep more flavours than darker roasts. This means that the marked tastes of the beans from the different areas can often be more distinguishable in lighter roasted beans. This is key to think about when buying coffee beans.
