FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is grown in many countries, each nation and region will produce a distinct flavour from what is basically the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species that are commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the location, they are generally sweet with notes of chocolate and sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry tasts & can have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are typically stronger, harsher & may display grainy or rubbery overtones.

Typically people find the flavour of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may show a less fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are typically thought as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter & less bitter taste. However, some blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can show superior taste & are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but commonly less caffeine than Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, usually people would rather consume Arabica because it is less bitter and displays a superior flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta beans because it is more difficult to farm.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is typically cultivated at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and tolerates a wide range of climatic conditions. Robusta is simplier to tend to on the plantation, has more bean yield and is more resistant to insects.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and regions. This is due to the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roast process also plays a major part in the flavour characteristics of the coffee. Combining different varieties and roasting is an art & science. Specialist roasters meticulously control and change all aspects of the roast process to develop different flavours in their beans and maintain consistency across batches of roasts. Flavour differs depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of other factors that are controlled during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted coffee. Light roasted beans usually retain more flavours than dark roasts. This can mean that the distinguishable flavours of the coffee from the different areas are be more pronounced in lighter roasted beans. This is key to consider when purchasing coffee beans.
