FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many nations around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is cultured in many nations, each nation & location will produce a distinct taste from what is essentially the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species which is usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The flavour of Arabica beans varies depending on the location, they are generally sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also have fruit or berry flavours & can show hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to exhibit more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that are typically stronger, harsher and may have grainy or rubbery flavours.

Most people find the flavour of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are typcially more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can exhibit a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are typically thought as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some blended coffee than include both Arabica & Robusta can exhibit superior flavour and are extremely popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but typcially less caffeine than Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, many people prefer to consume Arabica as it is not as bitter and displays a better flavour.

Arabica coffee is most costly compared to Robusta beans because it is harder to grow.

Arabica is cultivated in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is typically grown at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ and withstands a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the plantation, has a higher fruit yield and is more resistant to pest insects.

No, there are a lot of differences comparing Arabica coffeecoffee beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} and locations. This is due to the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roast proceedure also plays a major role in the flavour characteristics of the beans. Mixing different varieties & roasting is an art and science. Specialist roasters meticulously control and adjust every aspect of the roasting proceedure to make different flavours in their coffee & maintain consistency across batches of beans. Flavour changes based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of other aspects that are controlled during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted beans. Light roasted coffee will keep more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinguishable tastes of the coffee from the various locations are be more pronounced in lighter roasted coffee. This is paramount to think about when buying coffee beans.
