FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many countries around the globe. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many nations, each nation and location will make a different taste from what is essentially the same coffee species due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica plant that are commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the area, they are generally sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also have fruit or berry tasts and can show hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which tend to be stronger, harsher and can show grainy or rubbery overtones.

Most people find the flavour of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are usually more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can exhibit a less fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are typically considered as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can exhibit nicerbetter taste & are extremely popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but usually less caffeine as opposed to Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, usually people would rather drink Arabica because it is not as bitter and exhibits a superior taste.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta beans as it is more difficult to cultivate.

Arabica is farmed in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is usually grown at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the plantation, has greater fruit yield and is better resistant to pests.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and locations. This is due to the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roast proceedure also plays a significant part in the taste profile of the beans. Mixing different varieties & roasting is an art & science. Specialist roasters carefully control and change all aspects of the roasting proceedure to make different tastes in their beans and maintain consistency between batches of beans. Taste differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of additional conditions that are regulated during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted coffee. Light roast beans usually retain more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinct tastes of the coffee from the different areas are be more pronounced in lighter roasted coffee. This is key to consider when purchasing coffee.
