FAQs

Arabica beans are cultured in many nations around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many countries, each nation & region will make a distinct taste from what is essentially the same coffee species due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica plant which is typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the region, they are usually sweet with notes of chocolate and sugar. They can also have fruit or berry tasts and can exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to display more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that are stronger, harsher and can show grainy or rubbery tastes.

Manny people find the taste of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can display a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are typically considered as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can show superior flavour and are very renowned.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but commonly less caffeine than Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, usually people prefer to have Arabica as it is less bitter and shows a nicer flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta beans because it is more difficult to farm.

Arabica is grown in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is usually cultivated at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of climatic conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the farm, has more bean yield & is better resistant to bugs.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} and locations. This is because of the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roasting process also influences a major part in the flavour profile of the coffee. Blending different types & roasting is both an art and science. Specialist roasters carefully control and adjust all aspects of the roasting process to develop different flavours in their beans and maintain consistency between batches of roasts. Flavour differs depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a range of other things that are controlled during the roast.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted coffee. Light roast beans typcially retain more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinguishable tastes of the coffee from the different regions can often be more pronounced in light roasted coffee. This is paramount to think about when purchasing beans.
