FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many nations around the globe. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is grown in many countries, each nation & location will result in a different taste from what is essentially the same coffee plant due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica tree which is typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee bean production.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the location, they are typically sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also display fruit or berry flavours and may display hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which are typically stronger, harsher & may have grainy or rubbery flavours.

Most people find the taste of Arabica to be better to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are usually more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may exhibit a less fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly thought as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can show superior flavour and are extremely popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but commonly less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the higher amount of caffeine, usually people would rather consume Arabica because it is not as bitter and has a superior flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee as it is harder to cultivate.

Arabica is farmed in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often grown at sea level and in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ and tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the farm, has greater fruit yield and is more resistant to pests.

No, there is a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} and regions. This is due to the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roasting proceedure also plays a major part in the flavour profile of the coffee. Combining different types and roasting is both an art & science. Specialist roasters carefully control and change every aspect of the roasting process to craft different tastes in their coffee and maintain consistency between batches of coffee. Flavour differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of other aspects that are regulated during the roasting.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted beans. Light roast coffee usually retain more flavours than dark roasts. This can mean that the marked flavours of the beans from the different locations can often be more distinguishable in lighter roasted coffee. This is key to think about when buying coffee beans.
