FAQs

Arabica beans are produced in many nations around the globe. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many countries, each nation & region will produce a different flavour from what is essentially the same coffee species due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica tree which is usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee bean production.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the area, they are generally sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also show fruit or berry flavours and can have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that are typically stronger, harsher and may display grainy or rubbery flavours.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can display a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are typically thought as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they display a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can display nicerbetter flavour & are very popular.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but usually less caffeine compared to Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, typically people would rather drink Arabica because it is less bitter and shows a nicer flavour.

Arabica coffee is most costly than Robusta beans because it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is often farmed at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name indicates ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to grow on the farm, has a higher bean yield & is more resistant to pest insects.

No, there is a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are farmed in different {countriesnations} and areas. This is due to the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their culturing and processing.

The roast process also influences a significant role in the flavour characteristics of the coffee. Mixing different varieties & roasting is both an art and science. Professional roasters carefully control & change all aspects of the roast proceedure to develop different tastes in their beans and ensure consistency between batches of roasts. Flavour changes based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of other conditions that are controlled during the roasting.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted coffee. Light roast beans will keep more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinct tastes of the coffee from the various regions can often be more distinct in light roasted beans. This is paramount to consider when purchasing beans.
