FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many nations around the world. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many countries, each nation and region will result in a distinct flavour from what is basically the same coffee bush due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica shrub which is commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the area, they are typically sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry tasts and may have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that are typically stronger, harsher & may exhibit grainy or rubbery overtones.

Manny people find the taste of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are usually more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity types may show a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly known as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they display a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can display superior flavour & are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but typcially less caffeine than Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans contain about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, usually people prefer to drink Arabica as it is not as bitter and has a nicer flavour.

Arabica coffee is most costly than Robusta beans as it is more difficult to farm.

Arabica is grown in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta on the other hand is often farmed at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and tolerates a wide range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the plantation, has a higher bean yield & is better resistant to insects.

No, there is a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and areas. This is due to the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and processing.

The roast process also influences a major part in the taste profile of the beans. Blending different varieties & roasting is both an art and science. Specialist roasters carefully control & adjust every aspect of the roast proceedure to develop different flavours in their coffee & ensure consistency across batches of beans. Taste differs depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a range of additional factors that are regulated during the roasting.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted coffee. Light roasted coffee beans will keep more tastes than dark roasts. This means that the distinct tastes of the coffee from the different areas are be more pronounced in light roasted coffee. This is paramount to consider when buying coffee.
