FAQs

Arabica beans are grown in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is produced in many nations, each country and area will result in a different flavour from what is essentially the same coffee bush due to their distinct climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica species that are typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the location, they are usually sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also show fruit or berry flavours and can display hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans that are typically stronger, harsher and can display grainy or rubbery tastes.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are usually more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid come through as fruity flavours. Low acidity types can have a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are usually considered as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can display superior flavour & are very renowned.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but typcially less caffeine than Robusta beans.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater level of caffeine, many people prefer to consume Arabica as it is not as bitter & displays a nicer taste.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta beans because it is more difficult to farm.

Arabica is cultivated in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is usually grown at sea level & in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ & tolerates a wide range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to tend to on the farm, has more bean yield & is more resistant to bugs.

No, there is a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and locations. This is due to the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roast proceedure also plays a major part in the taste profile of the coffee. Blending different varieties & roasting is an art & science. Specialist roasters meticulously control & change all aspects of the roasting proceedure to make different flavours in their beans and maintain consistency across batches of beans. Flavour differs depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of additional factors that are controlled during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will show a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted beans. Light roasted beans typcially retain more tastes than darker roasts. This can mean that the marked flavours of the beans from the different regions are be more pronounced in light roasted coffee. This is paramount to consider when buying coffee beans.
