FAQs

Arabica beans are grown in many nations around the globe. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many countries, each nation and area will result in a different flavour from what is essentially the same coffee species due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species that are usually know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean production.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the area, they are typically sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry flavours & may show hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to display more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans which tend to be stronger, harsher & may exhibit grainy or rubbery tastes.

Most people find the flavour of Arabica to be nicer to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are typcially more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may show a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are commonly considered as superior  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some blends than include both Arabica and Robusta can exhibit superior taste & are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but typcially less caffeine compared to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans contain about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater amount of caffeine, commonly people would rather drink Arabica as it is not as bitter and has a superior flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee as it is harder to grow.

Arabica is grown in colder sub-tropical climates & at a higher altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is usually grown at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name would suggest ‘robust’ and withstands a broader range of climatic conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the farm, has more bean yield & is better resistant to pests.

No, there is a lot of differences comparing Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} & regions. This is due to the range of climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roast process also influences a significant role in the taste characteristics of the coffee beans. Combining different varieties & roasting is both an art and science. Specialist roasters carefully control & change all aspects of the roasting process to craft different flavours in their beans & maintain consistency between batches of coffee. Taste changes based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of additional factors that are controlled during the roast.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder flavour than lightly roasted beans. Light roasted coffee beans typcially keep more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the marked tastes of the coffee from the various regions can often be more pronounced in lighter roasted coffee. This is important to think about when buying beans.
