FAQs

Arabica beans are grown in many nations around the world. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many nations, each country & region will make a different taste from what is essentially the same coffee bush due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species which is typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the region, they are typically sweet with notes of chocolate and sugar. They can also show fruit or berry flavours and may show hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that tend to be stronger, harsher & may display grainy or rubbery flavours.

Usually people find the flavour of Arabica to be better to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic & less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may display a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are typically considered as better  tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter & less bitter flavour. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can display superior flavour & are extremely renowned.

Arabica beans contain caffeine but generally less caffeine than Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have almost twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the higher amount of caffeine, many people would rather have Arabica as it is not as bitter & exhibits a nicer taste.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta beans as it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is cultivated in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is usually farmed at sea level & in hotter climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ & withstands a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the farm, has a higher bean yield & is more resistant to insects.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} & regions. This is due to the different climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their culturing and preparation.

The roasting process also influences a major role in the flavour characteristics of the coffee. Blending different types and roasting is an art & science. Specialist roasters carefully control & change every aspect of the roasting process to make different tastes in their beans and ensure consistency between batches of roasts. Taste differs based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a range of additional conditions that are controlled during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted beans. Light roasted coffee beans usually retain more tastes than dark roasts. This means that the distinct flavours of the coffee from the various regions can often be more distinct in lighter roasted beans. This is key to think about when buying coffee.
