FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many countries around the world. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is farmed in many countries, each country & area will make a distinct taste from what is essentially the same coffee species due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica tree which is typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean production.

The flavour of Arabica beans changes depending on the location, they are typically sweet with notes of chocolate & sugar. They can also display fruit or berry tasts & may exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that tend to be stronger, harsher & may show grainy or rubbery overtones.

Manny people find the taste of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans tend to be more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can display a reduced fruity flavour.

Arabica coffee beans are usually considered as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they have a more refined sweeter and less bitter flavour. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can show nicerbetter flavour and are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but generally less caffeine as opposed to Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about double as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the higher level of caffeine, typically people prefer to have Arabica because it is not as bitter & has a superior flavour.

Arabica coffee is more expensive compared to Robusta coffee because it is more difficult to cultivate.

Arabica is cultivated in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is usually cultivated at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to tend to on the plantation, has greater bean yield & is more resistant to pests.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} and locations. This is because of the different climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roast proceedure also plays a significant role in the taste characteristics of the coffee. Mixing different varieties & roasting is an art and science. Specialist roasters meticulously control & adjust all aspects of the roasting process to craft different flavours in their coffee and ensure consistency across batches of roasts. Taste differs depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a range of additional conditions that are regulated during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder flavour than lighter roasted beans. Light roast beans will keep more tastes than dark roasts. This can mean that the distinguishable tastes of the coffee from the different areas can often be more pronounced in lighter roasted beans. This is paramount to consider when purchasing beans.
