FAQs

Arabica beans are grown in many countries around the world. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is cultured in many countries, each country and location will produce a different taste from what is basically the same coffee plant due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.

Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica shrub which is typically know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the world’s coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans varies depending on the area, they are typically sweet with notes of chocolate and sugar. They can also exhibit fruit or berry flavours and may exhibit hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to show more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans which are stronger, harsher and can exhibit grainy or rubbery flavours.

Typically people find the taste of Arabica to be tastier to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are usually more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are exhibited as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can have a reduced fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are usually thought as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they exhibit a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can have superior flavour and are extremely renowned.

Arabica beans have caffeine but usually less caffeine than Robusta coffee.

Raw Arabica beans have about 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans contain about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2%.

Despite the greater amount of caffeine, commonly people would rather drink Arabica because it is less bitter & displays a superior taste.

Arabica coffee is most costly compared to Robusta coffee because it is more difficult to grow.

Arabica is grown in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is usually cultivated at sea level & in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the farm, has a higher fruit yield & is more resistant to insects.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are cultured in different {countriesnations} and regions. This is because of the different climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roast proceedure also plays a significant role in the taste profile of the coffee. Mixing different varieties & roasting is an art & science. Professional roasters meticulously control and change all aspects of the roast process to make different flavours in their beans & maintain consistency between batches of coffee. Flavour changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a range of other things that are controlled during the roast.

Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder taste than lighter roasted coffee. Light roast beans usually retain more flavours than dark roasts. This means that the distinguishable flavours of the beans from the various areas can often be more distinguishable in lighter roasted coffee. This is paramount to consider when buying coffee.
