FAQs

Arabica beans are farmed in many countries around the world. Brazil is the biggest producer of Arabica.  Even though Arabica is cultured in many countries, each nation and region will produce a distinct flavour from what is essentially the same coffee species due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other things.

Arabica coffee beans are from the Coffea arabica species that are commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up about 60% of the global coffee bean supply.

The taste of Arabica beans changes depending on the area, they are generally sweet with notes of coco and sugar. They can also show fruit or berry flavours and may have hints of cereal or nuts.

Arabica tends to have more acidity & less bitterness than Robusta beans that are typically stronger, harsher and may show grainy or rubbery flavours.

Typically people find the flavour of Arabica to be superior to that of Robusta.

When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.

Yes, Arabica beans are more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans.  The acid are tasted as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties can have a less fruity taste.

Arabica coffee beans are typically considered as nicer  tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter & less bitter taste. However, some coffee blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can have superior taste & are very popular.

Arabica beans have caffeine but typcially less caffeine compared to Robusta coffee beans.

Raw Arabica beans have ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about double as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.

Despite the greater amount of caffeine, most people would rather drink Arabica as it is less bitter & displays a nicer taste.

Arabica coffee is more expensive than Robusta beans because it is harder to grow.

Arabica is cultivated in cooler sub-tropical climates & at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is often cultivated at sea level and in warmer climates.

Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ and tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is easier to grow on the farm, has a higher bean yield & is better resistant to pest insects.

No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} & areas. This is due to the different climates, soils and other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.

The roasting process also plays a significant part in the taste profile of the coffee beans. Mixing different types & roasting is an art & science. Professional roasters meticulously control & adjust all aspects of the roast process to develop different tastes in their beans and maintain consistency between batches of beans. Flavour changes based on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee & a number of other factors that are controlled during the proceedure.

Darker roasts will exhibit a much richer, bolder flavour than lightly roasted coffee. Light roasted coffee beans usually keep more tastes than dark roasts. This means that the marked tastes of the beans from the different regions are be more distinct in light roasted coffee. This is important to consider when buying coffee.
