FAQs
Arabica beans are grown in many nations around the world. Brazil is the largest producer of Arabica. Even though Arabica is farmed in many countries, each country and location will make a distinct flavour from what is basically the same coffee species due to their different climates, soils, altitudes, processing methods among other aspects.
Arabica coffee beans are beans from the Coffea arabica shrub which is commonly know as “mountain coffee” or “arabica coffee”. Arabica coffee makes up approximatly 60% of the global coffee bean production.
The flavour of Arabica beans varies depending on the location, they are typically sweet with notes of coco & sugar. They can also display fruit or berry tasts & can display hints of cereal or nuts.
Arabica tends to display more acidity and less bitterness than Robusta beans which tend to be stronger, harsher & can have grainy or rubbery overtones.
Most people find the flavour of Arabica to be better to that of Robusta.
When unroasted, Arabica beans smell like blueberries. The aroma of the roasted beans has been described as perfume like with hints of fruit and sugar. These aromas continue after you brew coffee.
Yes, Arabica beans are typcially more acidic and less bitter than Robusta beans. The acid are shown as fruity flavours. Low acidity varieties may exhibit a reduced fruity flavour.
Arabica coffee beans are typically known as nicer tasting than Robusta beans as they show a more refined sweeter and less bitter taste. However, some blends than include both Arabica & Robusta can display nicerbetter flavour & are very popular.
Arabica beans have caffeine but commonly less caffeine than Robusta beans.
Raw Arabica beans contain ~ 1.2{%percent} caffeine. Raw Robusta beans have about twice as much caffeine, at 2.2percent.
Despite the greater level of caffeine, usually people would rather have Arabica because it is less bitter and has a nicer flavour.
Arabica coffee is most costly compared to Robusta beans as it is more difficult to farm.
Arabica is farmed in cooler sub-tropical climates and at a greater altitudes (600-2000m). Robusta however is commonly cultivated at sea level and in hotter climates.
Robusta is as its name suggests ‘robust’ & tolerates a broader range of environmental conditions. Robusta is simplier to tend to on the farm, has a higher fruit yield and is more resistant to pest insects.
No, there are a lot of differences between Arabica beans that are grown in different {countriesnations} & regions. This is because of the range of climates, soils & other characteristics associated with their farming and preparation.
The roasting process also influences a significant role in the flavour characteristics of the coffee. Combining different varieties & roasting is both an art & science. Specialist roasters meticulously control & adjust all aspects of the roast proceedure to make different tastes in their beans & maintain consistency across batches of roasts. Taste changes depending on if it is a light roast, medium roast or dark roast coffee and a number of other aspects that are regulated during the process.
Darker roasts will have a much richer, bolder taste than lightly roasted beans. Light roast beans typcially keep more flavours than darker roasts. This can mean that the distinguishable flavours of the coffee from the different areas can often be more pronounced in lighter roasted beans. This is important to consider when buying coffee.
